2 J's Auto Transport

North Dakota Auto Transport Company

2J's Auto Transport is the top-rated car shipping company in North Dakota, offering the fastest and easiest way to ship your vehicle to or from North Dakota.

Step 1 of 3 - Destination

Welcome to 2 J’s Auto Transport a family-owned auto transport broker with 13+ years of experience moving vehicles in and out of North Dakota. We specialize in open carrier shipping, enclosed auto transport, RV transportation, heavy hauling, and shipping of operable and inoperable vehicles across all 50 states. North Dakota is one of the more challenging states for auto transport extreme winters, vast distances, and sparse interstate coverage outside the I-29 and I-94 corridors mean planning ahead matters more here than in most states. Our broker network gives us access to carriers across the country, which is critical for a state where local carrier capacity is naturally limited.

Auto transport shouldn’t be complicated. From the first quote through final delivery, we handle every part of the process, dispatching carriers, coordinating pickup and drop-off, managing documentation, and providing direct support whenever you have a question. For North Dakota shipments, that often means planning around winter storms that can close I-94 or I-29 for days, coordinating equipment shipments to and from the Bakken oil fields, handling military vehicle transport for Minot and Grand Forks Air Force Bases, and timing snowbird moves to and from Arizona and Florida. We’ve been doing this since 2012, and our experience with low-density, weather-affected markets like North Dakota shows up in the details

We’re a federally licensed auto transport broker, bonded by the FMCSA and operating under USDOT regulations. Every carrier we dispatch in North Dakota carries active cargo insurance which we verify before each job. We understand state-specific considerations: North Dakota’s 30-day vehicle registration window for new residents, the state’s 5% motor vehicle excise tax, the absence of statewide emissions testing, and the practical reality that winter shipments may need flexible scheduling around weather closures. Whether your car is heading to Fargo, Bismarck, Williston, or a small town in the Red River Valley, we handle the regulatory and logistical pieces correctly the first time.

To make things easier for our customers, we’ve shared insights on city-specific transport regulations through a series of detailed guides. These cover everything from car shipping laws to vehicle transport rules in Dallas, TX, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orlando, FL, Houston, and Miami. Each article breaks down what you need to know before moving a vehicle in or out of these major cities, so you’re always informed and ready.

Across more than a decade of North Dakota auto transport work, we’ve built our reputation on three things: clear quotes with no hidden fees, realistic pickup windows that account for weather and route conditions, and direct human support whenever you need it. We’ve coordinated thousands of vehicle shipments in and out of North Dakota from NDSU and UND students moving home for the summer, to oil field workers shipping equipment to and from the Bakken, to retirees making the annual snowbird trip to Arizona.

If you’re shipping your car for the first time in North DakotaWelcome to 2 J’s Auto Transport! one of the leading, don’t worry. Here’s a complete guide on how to transport a car. This guide is created to educate you about the methods of car shipping.

North Dakota State-Specific Intro

North Dakota’s auto transport network is built around just two major interstates: I-29 runs north south along the eastern edge of the state from the South Dakota line through Fargo and Grand Forks to the Canadian border, and I-94 cuts east–west the full width of the state from Fargo through Jamestown, Bismarck, and Dickinson to the Montana line. Most carrier traffic stays on these two routes, which means pickups and deliveries in western and northern North Dakota particularly around Minot, Williston, and the smaller Bakken oil field communities may require slightly longer scheduling windows.

The state’s geography and population density (the third-least populated in the U.S.) make North Dakota a low-volume auto transport market. That’s why working with a broker matters here: a single-fleet carrier may not have a truck running your route for weeks, but a broker network can match you with whichever carrier happens to be moving through. At 2 J’s Auto Transport, we ship to and from Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot, West Fargo, Williston, Dickinson, Mandan, Jamestown, and across every North Dakota county including student vehicles for NDSU and UND, military vehicle shipments for Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB, oil and gas equipment for the Bakken, and snowbird traffic to Arizona, Texas, and Florida every fall.

On-Time Pickup and Delivery

On-time pickup is what we hold our carrier network to. As an auto transport broker, our job is to match you with vetted carriers that have a proven track record of meeting committed pickup dates and to stay in the loop with that carrier throughout transit. Every carrier we dispatch provides status updates during the journey, which we pass directly to you. If something changes, you'll hear about it right away, not after the fact. The goal: no surprises, no missed appointments, and clear communication from pickup through delivery.

Shipment Support System

From booking to delivery, our shipment support team stays with you. Reach us by phone, email, or live chat and we'll relay real-time location updates and status reports from the carrier handling your vehicle. Whether you have a quick question or need a detailed update, we're one call away.

Expert and Reliable Team of Drivers

Every carrier in our network is fully licensed and insured under FMCSA regulations, and vetted before we dispatch them. The carriers we work with in North Dakota understand the realities of operating in the state: extreme cold winters that can ground operations for days, sparse interstate coverage outside I-29 and I-94, long distances between population centers, and Bakken oil field traffic in the west. We hold every carrier to the same standard: treat each vehicle like it's their own because for that journey, it is their responsibility, and ours to oversee.

Cost-Effective Shipment

Quality shouldn't come at a premium. Our transparent pricing means no hidden fees, no last-minute surcharges, and a quote that reflects what you'll actually pay. As an established broker with strong carrier relationships built over 13+ years, we negotiate competitive rates with the carriers we dispatch, savings we pass directly to you. For North Dakota in particular, our broker network gives us access to carriers across the country, which matters in a state with naturally limited carrier capacity.

Popular Auto Transport Routes from North Dakota

Intro: These are the routes our North Dakota customers ship most often. Distances and transit times are typical estimates exact pricing depends on vehicle type, season, weather, and carrier availability. Contact us for a current quote.

  • North Dakota to Arizona: 1,500 miles, typical transit 5–8 days. Heavy snowbird traffic October through November.
  • North Dakota to Florida: 2,000 miles, typical transit 6–9 days. Peak demand for snowbird season.
  • North Dakota to Texas: 1,300 miles, typical transit 4–7 days. Strong corridor for both relocations and snowbird traffic.
  • North Dakota to California: 1,700 miles, typical transit 6–9 days. Steady year-round demand.
  • North Dakota to Washington: 1,300 miles, typical transit 4–6 days. Pacific Northwest relocations.
  • North Dakota to Illinois: 900 miles, typical transit 3–5 days. Common Midwest corridor.
  • North Dakota to Minnesota: 250 miles, typical transit 1–3 days. Same-week pickup typically available.
  • North Dakota to Montana: 400 miles, typical transit 2–4 days. Neighboring state, quick turnarounds.
  • North Dakota to Colorado: 700 miles, typical transit 3–5 days. Year-round volume.

Closing line: For the reverse direction (shipping TO North Dakota), high volume comes from snowbirds returning in April–May, military relocations to Minot and Grand Forks AFBs, and energy industry workers heading to or from the Bakken oil fields year-round.

North Dakota Seasonal Shipping — Weather Is the #1 Factor

North Dakota has some of the most extreme winter weather in the lower 48, and it affects auto transport more here than almost anywhere else. Planning around the seasons isn’t optional it’s essential.

Winter (December–February): This is the hardest shipping window. Temperatures can drop below -30°F, ground blizzards reduce visibility to zero on open prairie sections of I-94 and I-29, and full interstate closures lasting 24–72 hours are common. Carrier capacity drops significantly during winter many carriers avoid the region entirely. We strongly recommend enclosed transport for any high-value vehicle shipping out of North Dakota in winter, and we build buffer time into every pickup window during these months.

Spring (March–May): Red River Valley flooding can affect Fargo-area routes from March through April. By late spring, conditions improve significantly. April and May see snowbird return traffic from Arizona, Texas, and Florida book early if you’re on that schedule.

Summer (June–August): The most reliable shipping window for North Dakota. Long days, dry roads, and full carrier availability make summer ideal for both regular and high-value shipments.

Fall (September–November): September and October are excellent shipping months. November is the start of snowbird departure season Arizona, Texas, and Florida routes peak in volume and price. Book 3–4 weeks ahead during this window.

North Dakota Vehicle Regulations to Know Before Shipping

North Dakota has specific vehicle regulations that affect timing and cost when shipping a car in or out of the state. We’re not lawyers always confirm details with the North Dakota Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division but here’s the practical overview.

Registration timeline: New North Dakota residents have 30 days to register their vehicle after establishing residency.

Motor vehicle excise tax: North Dakota charges a 5% motor vehicle excise tax on vehicle purchases (paid when titling, not annually). There’s no separate vehicle property tax.

Emissions testing: North Dakota does not require statewide emissions testing, which simplifies registration for vehicles shipped in from other states.

Vehicle inspections: No periodic state inspections are required for personal vehicles.

Insurance minimum: North Dakota requires liability insurance with minimums of 25/50/25 (bodily injury per person/total per accident/property damage in thousands).

Plates during transport: You don’t need plates to ship a car. We can transport vehicles with no plates, expired plates, or out-of-state plates.

Canadian border note: If you’re shipping a vehicle to or from the Canadian provinces (Manitoba or Saskatchewan), additional customs documentation applies. We can advise on the process for cross-border coordination.

For full regulatory details, visit the North Dakota DOT Motor Vehicle Division.

Our Story

Let’s get back to 2012 when two experienced professionals, John and Joyce, saw a need for real change in the auto transport industry. We noticed how confusing and unreliable auto transport could be, and decided to do something about it. Our goal was simple, bring honesty, clarity, and consistency to vehicle transport across the state.

What started as a small idea quickly grew into a full-service operation built on trust and dedication. Through long hours, constant improvement, and a strong focus on customer satisfaction, we’ve built a reputation for reliable and affordable transport. We’ve worked hard to keep our rates among the lowest in the industry, without cutting corners on service or support.

Over the years, thousands of customers have shipped their vehicles with us and come back again and again. Why? Because they know what to expect. No games, no hidden fees just smooth, straightforward service from pickup to delivery.

Whether you’re moving a car from North Dakota to New York or across the country, we’re here to get the job done right. Give us a chance, and you’ll see why so many people trust us with their vehicles every day.

I buy and sell construction equipment all over the US and always go to 2 J’s for long distance transport. They are able to find excellent rates on partial loads within a day or two. The drivers they send are always very professional and helpful. I’ve received quotes from other dispatchers and sometimes drivers offer their services directly, but they can rarely offer compete with 2 J’s pricing or timely service.

You guys were awesome. Picked up on time, dropped off on time as promised. I was returning customer. I had used their service a year and a half back. They were good at that time and this time too they were fantastic. I was fortunate to have got an enclosed truck for the price of open. Seems they had a truck passing on my dates and they gladly put me there. Thank you, John. Thank you, Joyce. I would highly recommend their services.

At 2 J’s Auto Transport, we’ve built our North Dakota operations around these realities. We’re upfront about pickup windows during winter months. We have access to a national carrier network critical for a state with limited local capacity. And we communicate clearly when weather affects scheduling rather than leaving you guessing.

North Dakota State-Specific Intro

North Dakota’s auto transport network is built around just two major interstates: I-29 runs north–south along the eastern edge of the state from the South Dakota line through Fargo and Grand Forks to the Canadian border, and I-94 cuts east–west the full width of the state from Fargo through Jamestown, Bismarck, and Dickinson to the Montana line. Most carrier traffic stays on these two routes, which means pickups and deliveries in western and northern North Dakota particularly around Minot, Williston, and the smaller Bakken oil field communities may require slightly longer scheduling windows.

How to Prepare Your Vehicle Before Shipping

  • Wash your car: A clean vehicle makes it easier to spot and document any pre-existing damage before shipping.
  • Remove personal belongings: Auto transport companies are not responsible for personal items left inside the vehicle.
  • Keep only a quarter tank of gas: This reduces weight and meets safety guidelines for transport.
  • Turn off the alarm: This prevents unnecessary disruptions during transit.

  • When shipping a car, it’s best to compare quotes from at least two to three transport companies. At 2J’s Auto Transport, we provide reliable, affordable services without compromising on quality.
  • Another tip to save money is to schedule your shipment during the off-season. Summer is the busiest time for auto transport, making rates higher due to high demand. If possible, book your shipment in the fall or winter when prices are typically lower.

North Dakota Auto Transport FAQs

Do you handle pickups from rural or remote areas in North Dakota?

Yes. We serve all parts of North Dakota, including small towns and remote rural areas. Because much of the state is outside the I-29 and I-94 corridors, pickups in places like Williston, Dickinson, Bottineau, or the smaller communities may require slightly longer scheduling windows typically 3–7 days from request rather than the 1–3 days we see in Fargo or Bismarck. We’ll always give you a realistic window upfront.

Do you offer enclosed transport for luxury or classic cars in North Dakota?

Yes. Enclosed shipping is strongly recommended for high-value, exotic, or classic vehicles in North Dakota particularly during winter, when road salt, brine, and gravel from icy road treatments can damage exposed vehicles during a multi-day cross-country trip.

Can you ship from the Bakken oil fields (Williston, Dickinson, Watford City)?

es. We regularly handle vehicle and heavy equipment shipments to and from the Bakken region. Pickup in the more remote oil patch communities may take a few extra days to schedule, but we have the carrier network to make it happen.

Can you ship vehicles for Minot AFB or Grand Forks AFB military personnel?

Yes. We coordinate military vehicle shipments for active-duty personnel relocating to or from Minot Air Force Base and Grand Forks Air Force Base. We’re familiar with PCS timelines and the documentation involved.

Can you ship vehicles for NDSU and UND students?

Yes. We handle student vehicle shipments to and from North Dakota State University (Fargo) and the University of North Dakota (Grand Forks). May (move-out) and August (move-in) are our busiest student months book 2–3 weeks ahead.

Do you offer auto transport service to all U.S. states and cities?

Yes, we provide auto shipping services across all 50 U.S. states and almost every U.S. city. Pricing may vary based on distance, shipping method, season, weather conditions, pickup and delivery locations, fuel costs, and whether the car is operable or not.

To make things even easier, we’ve also gathered some helpful tips and information that can guide you through the process and help you avoid common issues. Whether you’re shipping for the first time or you’ve done it before, this resource is here to make sure you’re prepared and confident whenever you’re ready to ship your vehicle.
