2 J's Auto Transport Services in California (CA)

Welcome to 2 J’s Auto Transport! A family-owned auto transport broker with 13+ years of experience moving vehicles in and out of California. We specialize in open carrier shipping, enclosed auto transport, RV transportation, heavy hauling, and shipping of operable and inoperable vehicles across all 50 states. California is the largest auto transport market in the country, I-5 runs the entire length of the state from Oregon to Mexico, and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together form the largest container port complex in the Western Hemisphere. Whether you’re shipping out of LA, the Bay Area, San Diego, or Sacramento, carriers are constantly moving through California’s corridors.

California stretches over 800 miles from the Oregon border to the Mexican border, and its auto transport network is built around five major interstates and one of the world’s busiest port systems. I-5 runs the full north–south length from the Oregon border through the Central Valley to San Diego. I-10 cuts east–west through Los Angeles connecting Santa Monica to Arizona. I-15 handles the LA-to-Las Vegas corridor and continues to Utah. I-80 crosses from the Bay Area east through Sacramento to Nevada. I-40 covers the far southern east–west route through the Mojave to Arizona.

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach together form the largest container port complex in the Western Hemisphere, processing more imported vehicles from Asia than any other facility in the country. The Port of Oakland handles significant Bay Area import and export volume. If you’ve imported a vehicle from Japan, South Korea, or Germany through a California port, we coordinate direct port pickup and delivery anywhere in the state or country.

California is the largest auto transport market in the United States by volume, which means carrier availability is high and routes are competitive, particularly the California-to-New York and California-to-Florida corridors, which run almost daily. At 2 J’s Auto Transport, we ship to and from Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, Oakland, Long Beach, Anaheim, Riverside, and every other California city.

Auto transport shouldn’t be complicated. From the first quote through final delivery, we handle every part of the process, dispatching carriers, coordinating pickup and drop-off, managing documentation, and providing direct support whenever you have a question. For California shipments, that often means navigating LA’s famously dense traffic for pickups in the 310, 323, and 818 area codes, coordinating around Bay Area congestion on I-101 and I-280, managing California’s strict CARB vehicle emissions requirements for vehicles being registered in the state, and planning around wildfire season route disruptions in summer and fall. We’ve been doing this since 2012, and our California experience shows up in the details.

We’re a federally licensed auto transport broker, bonded by the FMCSA and operating under USDOT regulations. Every carrier we dispatch in California carries active cargo insurance which we verify before each job. We understand California’s specific requirements: the state’s 20-day registration window for new residents (shorter than most states), the CARB smog compliance requirements for out-of-state vehicles being registered in California, the higher vehicle registration fees compared to other states, and the fact that California does not allow use tax credit for vehicles purchased in another state in most cases. Whether your vehicle is heading to Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, or a smaller California community, we handle the regulatory and logistical pieces correctly.

Across more than a decade of California auto transport work, we’ve built our reputation on three things: clear quotes with no hidden fees, on-time pickup and delivery, and direct human support whenever you need it. We’ve coordinated thousands of vehicle shipments in and out of California, from Silicon Valley tech workers relocating to Austin and Miami, to Beverly Hills collectors shipping classics to Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, to military families PCSing to and from the San Diego and Ventura County bases, to college students moving vehicles for UCLA, USC, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.

Worried about scams in the auto transport industry? Before you book, learn how to spot and avoid common auto transport scams so you can protect yourself from unreliable providers.

Broker vs Carrier

2 J’s Auto Transport is a federally licensed auto transport broker (MC# 799000). That means we don’t own the trucks, we dispatch from a vetted network of independent carriers. For California, this flexibility is essential: we can match your vehicle with a carrier already running I-5 from Oregon to San Diego, find one on I-10 heading east to Arizona, coordinate a Port of LA/Long Beach terminal pickup for an imported vehicle, or source an enclosed carrier during wildfire season for maximum protection.

California Shipping Considerations - What Makes the State Unique

California doesn’t have traditional harsh winters, but several state-specific factors affect auto transport timing and planning more than most customers expect.

Wildfire season (June–October): California’s wildfire season can close sections of I-5, I-15, and US-101 at short notice, particularly in Northern California, the Inland Empire, and Ventura/Santa Barbara counties. Smoke and ash can also affect vehicle condition during open transport. We monitor active fire situations and reroute as needed, but summer and fall shipments should carry extra buffer time.

Summer peak demand (June–August): Combined with wildfire disruptions, summer is the busiest and most expensive shipping window for California. Prices are typically 15–25% higher than off-season. Book 3–4 weeks ahead.

LA metro congestion: Pickups and deliveries in Los Angeles, particularly in West LA, Hollywood, the Valley, and coastal cities, can be affected by traffic. Morning pickup windows are significantly faster than afternoon in most LA zip codes.

Bay Area density: San Francisco’s narrow streets mean carriers often use nearby commercial pickup points (parking lots, wider streets) rather than direct address delivery in dense neighborhoods. We coordinate this in advance.

Port timing: Vehicles arriving at the Port of LA/Long Beach or Port of Oakland typically need 1–5 business days for port processing before we can coordinate pickup. Plan your overall timeline accordingly.

California Vehicle Regulations to Know Before Shipping

California has the strictest vehicle regulations of any state, and several of them directly affect auto transport timing and cost. We’re not lawyers always confirm details with the California DMV but here’s the practical overview.

Registration timeline: New California residents must register their vehicle within 20 days of establishing residency shorter than most states (many require 30–60 days).

CARB emissions compliance: California has the strictest emissions standards in the country, enforced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Out-of-state vehicles being registered in California must pass a smog inspection. Vehicles with recent out-of-state registrations may also face a waiting period before they can register. If you’re shipping a diesel vehicle or an older model, check CARB compliance before shipping in non-compliant vehicles cannot be registered.

Vehicle use tax: California charges a use tax on vehicles purchased out of state that are brought into California. Unlike most states, California does not allow a use tax credit for sales tax paid in another state in most cases. The rate is 7.25% (base) plus local district taxes.

Smog inspection: Required for most gasoline vehicles model year 1976 and newer, except vehicles that are 8 model years or newer (exempt). First-time registrations in California always require a smog check.

Plates during transport: You don’t need plates to ship a car. We can transport vehicles with no plates, expired plates, or out-of-state plates.

I buy and sell construction equipment all over the US and always go to 2 J’s for long distance transport. They are able to find excellent rates on partial loads within a day or two. The drivers they send are always very professional and helpful. I’ve received quotes from other dispatchers and sometimes drivers offer their services directly, but they can rarely offer compete with 2 J’s pricing or timely service.

You guys were awesome. Picked up on time, dropped off on time as promised. I was returning customer. I had used their service a year and a half back. They were good at that time and this time too they were fantastic. I was fortunate to have got an enclosed truck for the price of open. Seems they had a truck passing on my dates and they gladly put me there. Thank you, John. Thank you, Joyce. I would highly recommend their services.

Car Transport Services in California (CA)

Choosing an auto transport company for a California shipment comes with considerations specific to the state. Urban density in LA and the Bay Area means carriers can’t always pull up to a residential address in a narrow street alternative nearby pickup points may be needed. California has stricter emissions standards than any other state, which matters if you’re shipping a non-CARB-compliant vehicle in. And the state’s size (over 800 miles from north to south) means intra-state shipments (like LA to the Bay Area) have their own logistics distinct from cross-country moves.

At 2 J’s Auto Transport, we’ve built our California operations around these realities. We know which neighborhoods in LA require careful carrier coordination. We advise customers on CARB compliance before shipping in. And we’re clear about pickup windows in California’s congested metro areas versus more accessible Inland Empire or Central Valley locations.

Whether you’re shipping to or from California, the process is the same: free quote, confirmed pickup window, regular status updates during transit, and door-to-door delivery wherever access allows.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does car transport typically cost?

The cost of car transport to or from California typically depends on several key factors rather than a fixed price. These include the total distance of the shipment, methods of transport (open vs. enclosed), the size and condition of the vehicle, seasonal demand, and how accessible the pickup and delivery locations are, especially in congested areas like Los Angeles or San Francisco. Additional factors like expedited shipping, fuel prices, and whether the car is operable or not also influence the final rate.

Can you ship from the Port of Los Angeles, Port of Long Beach, or Port of Oakland?

Yes. If you’ve imported a vehicle through any of these ports, we coordinate direct port pickup once the vehicle has cleared customs and port processing (typically 1–5 business days after arrival). We deliver anywhere in California or across the country.

What is the cheapest way to ship a car in California?

The cheapest way to ship a car in California is by using open transport with terminal-to-terminal service. Open carriers are more affordable than enclosed ones, and dropping off and picking up your vehicle at designated terminals cuts down on door-to-door convenience fees. Booking in advance, choosing popular routes (like between Los Angeles and San Francisco), and making sure the car is operable can all help lower the cost even more.

How does California's CARB requirement affect shipping?

If you’re shipping a vehicle into California to register it here, it must meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards. Vehicles from other states may not automatically comply. We strongly recommend checking CARB compliance before you ship, non-compliant vehicles can be shipped to California but cannot be registered there without modification or an exemption. Visit arb.ca.gov for compliance information.

Do you handle tech industry relocations from Silicon Valley?

Yes. We regularly coordinate vehicle shipments for tech workers relocating from the Bay Area and LA to Texas, Florida, Colorado, and other states. We’re familiar with the high volume and tight timelines that come with corporate moves, and we offer multiple booking windows to work around your relocation schedule.

Is my vehicle insured during transport?

Yes, your vehicle is insured during transport. All licensed auto transport carriers are required by law to carry liability and cargo insurance. However, coverage levels can vary by company, so it’s a good idea to ask for proof of insurance and review the policy details. For extra peace of mind, you can also check with your personal auto insurance provider to see if your vehicle is covered during shipping.

How far in advance should I book auto transport in California?

It’s best to book auto transport in California about 1–2 weeks in advance. This gives carriers enough time to schedule your shipment at the best rate.

What are the cities you cover in California for vehicle shipping?

We cover vehicle shipping throughout California, including major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, and Oakland. We also service surrounding areas and smaller cities such as Bakersfield, Riverside, Long Beach, Anaheim, and Santa Rosa. Whether you’re shipping to or from a metro area or a more remote location, we can help arrange transport across the state.

Do you offer auto transport service to all U.S. states and cities?

Yes, we provide auto shipping services across all 50 U.S. states and almost every U.S. city. Pricing may vary based on distance, shipping method, season, weather conditions, pickup and delivery locations, fuel costs, and whether the car is operable or not.

To make things even easier, we’ve also gathered some helpful tips and information that can guide you through the process and help you avoid common issues. Whether you’re shipping for the first time or you’ve done it before, this resource is here to make sure you’re prepared and confident whenever you’re ready to ship your vehicle.
