Road Network & Carrier Access

LA’s freeway system is the backbone of auto transport on the West Coast. I-405 connects the Valley to the Westside to Long Beach (and is notoriously congested at all hours). I-10 runs east through downtown to San Bernardino and beyond. I-5 runs north through Burbank/Glendale to the Central Valley and south to Orange County/San Diego. I-110 connects downtown to the ports and South Bay. The 101 serves Hollywood, the Valley, and continues northwest to Ventura.

Carrier access varies dramatically across LA. Suburban areas (Encino, Calabasas, Pasadena, Arcadia, Torrance, Cerritos) generally have wide streets and easy carrier access. Dense urban areas (DTLA, Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Koreatown) and hillside neighborhoods (Hollywood Hills, Laurel Canyon, Bel Air, Pacific Palisades) often CANNOT accommodate a 75-foot car hauler due to narrow roads, steep grades, and tight turns. In these cases, carriers use staging areas near freeway on-ramps or commercial lots.

Common Pickup & Delivery Areas

DTLA / Arts District / South Park: Dense, congested, limited truck parking. Carriers prefer early morning pickup (before 7 AM) or staging at a nearby commercial lot.
Hollywood / West Hollywood / Silver Lake / Echo Park: Narrow streets, hilly terrain, permit parking. Full-size carriers often can’t access residential addresses. Meeting point on a wider boulevard (Sunset, Santa Monica, Highland) is common.
Hollywood Hills / Laurel Canyon / Bel Air / Pacific Palisades: EXTREMELY difficult for carriers. Steep, winding, narrow roads. Meeting point at the base of the hills is standard.
Westside (Santa Monica, Venice, Brentwood, Westwood, Mar Vista, Culver City): Mixed access. Main boulevards work; narrow residential blocks may need alternatives. UCLA campus area = seasonal student demand.
Valley (Sherman Oaks, Encino, Tarzana, Woodland Hills, North Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale): Generally excellent carrier access with wider streets and good 101/405/5 access. High-volume pickup area.
South LA / Inglewood / Compton / Hawthorne: Good carrier access near major corridors. SoFi Stadium/LAX area sees event-related transport demand.

LA-Specific Transport Considerations

I-405 congestion: I-405 is the most congested freeway in the United States. Carriers scheduling pickups or deliveries on the Westside, South Bay, or Valley via the 405 plan around peak hours (7-10 AM and 3-7 PM weekdays). Morning windows before 7 AM or mid-day windows (10 AM-2 PM) are significantly faster for carrier scheduling on 405-dependent routes.

Hollywood Hills and hillside access: LA’s hillside neighborhoods (Laurel Canyon, Mulholland, Bel Air, Pacific Palisades, Mt. Washington) have narrow, winding roads with no truck turnaround space. Full-size car haulers physically cannot navigate these streets. We coordinate flatbed or single-car carrier alternatives for direct access, or arrange a meeting point at the base of the hill on a wider boulevard. This is standard for LA hillside pickups and we handle it proactively, never the day-of.

Port of LA / Long Beach imports: LA’s ports process more imported vehicles from Japan, South Korea, and Germany than any other U.S. facility. If you’ve imported a vehicle, we coordinate pickup directly from port terminals once customs and processing are complete. Allow 1-5 business days for port processing after vessel arrival before scheduling your pickup appointment.

Wildfire season (June-October): Southern California wildfires can close sections of I-5, the 101, and local canyon roads at short notice. Smoke and ash during open transport can affect high-value vehicles during active fire periods. Enclosed transport is recommended for luxury and classic cars during fire season. We monitor active fire situations and reroute affected shipments.

CARB emissions compliance: Vehicles being registered in California must meet CARB (California Air Resources Board) standards. If you’re shipping a car into LA to register it in California, check CARB compliance first. Non-compliant vehicles can be shipped but cannot be registered without modification.
