Road Network & Carrier Routes

Maine’s auto transport network is essentially one highway: I-95. It enters the state at Kittery (NH border), runs through Portland (the state’s largest city), continues through Lewiston/Auburn, Augusta (capital), Waterville, Bangor, and eventually reaches Houlton at the Canadian border nearly 300 miles. I-295 provides a bypass around Portland. US-1 runs along the coast but is slow, scenic, and not a carrier route.

Carrier availability is strongest between Kittery and Portland (strong I-95 traffic from Boston). It remains good through Augusta and Bangor. North of Bangor, carrier traffic drops dramatically. Aroostook County (Presque Isle, Caribou, Houlton) has very limited carrier access this is potato farming country with vast uninhabited forest. Allow 72+ hours extra for northern Maine pickups.

Coastal Maine (Bar Harbor, Camden, Rockland, Kennebunkport, Boothbay Harbor) is NOT on I-95 these communities are accessed via US-1 and state highways. Carrier access is moderate for southern coastal towns (Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach) but limited for Downeast Maine (Bar Harbor, Ellsworth, Machias).

Mud season (March–May) Similar to Vermont, Maine’s spring thaw makes many unpaved roads soft or temporarily impassable. Rural Maine has extensive unpaved roads, particularly in the western mountains and northern interior. Carriers may be unable to access properties on dirt roads during this period. Meeting points on paved state highways are standard.

Summer coastal tourism (June–September) drives the biggest seasonal auto transport demand in Maine. Bar Harbor/Acadia, Camden, Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach, and Boothbay Harbor see massive vacation traffic. Seasonal residents and vacation homeowners ship vehicles north in May/June and south in September/October. Book 3-4 weeks ahead for summer coastal pickups.

Snowbird season (October–November southbound, April–May northbound) Maine has a significant snowbird population heading to Florida for the winter. The ME→FL corridor via I-95 sees pricing spikes during peak departure (October-November) and return (April-May).

Most of Maine north of Bangor is EXTREMELY remote. Aroostook County alone is larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island combined with a population under 70,000. Vast uninhabited forest, few roads, and almost no carrier traffic. We’re honest about this: if your pickup is in northern Maine, expect longer lead times and potentially a meeting point in Bangor.

Maine vehicle regulations: Annual safety inspection required. No emissions testing. New residents must register within 30 days. Maine charges 5.5% sales tax on vehicle purchases. Maine requires front and rear plates.
