2 J's Auto Transport is the top-rated car shipping company in Alaska, offering the fastest and easiest way to ship your vehicle to or from Alaska.
Welcome to 2 J’s Auto Transport, one of the leading auto transport companies serving Alaska. Whether you’re relocating to Anchorage, shipping a vehicle from Fairbanks to the lower 48, or coordinating a military PCS from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, we coordinate reliable, affordable, and fully insured auto transportation between Alaska and the continental United States.
Shipping a vehicle to or from Alaska is fundamentally different from any mainland transport. Alaska is not connected to the lower 48 states by any U.S. highway the only options are ocean barge shipping from Washington State ports, or overland transport via the Alaska Highway through Canada. We coordinate both methods depending on your location, budget, and timeline, managing the entire process from pickup to Alaska delivery as your single point of contact.
As a federally licensed auto transport broker (MC# 799000, USDOT# 02349019), we dispatch mainland truck carriers, book ocean barge freight through our Alaska shipping partners, and coordinate on-ground delivery at the Alaska end. You get one quote, one contact, and complete visibility from start to finish.
If you’re shipping your car for the first time to or from Alaska, here’s a complete guide on how to transport a car to walk you through the process.
This is how the majority of vehicles reach Alaska. The process works in three stages:
Stage 1: Mainland truck transport to port: Your vehicle is picked up from your lower-48 location by a standard car carrier and transported to either Seattle, WA or Tacoma, WA — the two ports with regular barge service to Alaska. This mainland leg takes 1-7 days depending on your origin location.
Stage 2: Ocean barge to Alaska: Your vehicle is loaded onto an ocean barge operated by carriers like TOTE Maritime Alaska or Matson. The barge crosses the Gulf of Alaska to the Port of Anchorage (primary destination), or connects to Fairbanks via rail/truck from Anchorage. Transit time from Seattle/Tacoma to Anchorage is approximately 7-10 days by sea.
Stage 3: Alaska delivery: Once your vehicle arrives at the Port of Anchorage, it can be picked up directly or delivered locally within the Anchorage/Mat-Su Valley area. For Fairbanks delivery, the vehicle is trucked or railed north via the Parks Highway (~360 miles, 1-2 days). For Juneau, Ketchikan, or Southeast Alaska communities, a separate Alaska Marine Highway ferry is required (see below).
Total timeline: 14-21 days from lower-48 pickup to Alaska delivery.
It is technically possible to transport a vehicle to Alaska by road — but it requires driving through Canada (British Columbia and Yukon Territory), covering approximately 2,300 miles from Seattle to Anchorage through remote wilderness.
This method is less common because:
When overland makes sense: For pickups already in Washington State, Oregon, or the Pacific Northwest, overland can be faster and more affordable than barge shipping. For anywhere else in the lower 48, ocean barge is usually the better option.
Extreme cold and darkness (October-April): Alaska experiences some of the harshest conditions on Earth. Interior Alaska (Fairbanks) can reach -40°F to -60°F in winter. Daylight drops to 4-5 hours in Anchorage and near-zero in northern communities. Winter shipments require carriers experienced in extreme cold operations. Battery health, coolant, and fluid viscosity are critical concerns for vehicles sitting on barges or trucks in sub-zero temperatures.
Juneau has NO road connection: Alaska’s state capital cannot be reached by car from anywhere else in Alaska or the lower 48. Vehicles must arrive by Alaska Marine Highway ferry (from Bellingham WA or other Southeast Alaska ports) or by barge. This is unique in the entire United States, no other state capital is inaccessible by road.
Much of Alaska is off the road system: Communities like Bethel, Barrow/Utqiaġvik, Nome, Kodiak, Cordova, and hundreds of villages are NOT connected to the road network. Vehicles can only reach these communities by barge, ferry, or (for smaller vehicles) air freight. If your destination is off the road system, contact us for a custom logistics plan.
Military PCS (massive volume): Alaska has major military installations that generate significant PCS vehicle shipping traffic:
Port of Anchorage processing: After barge arrival, vehicles go through port processing (1-3 business days). There is no customs inspection for domestic shipments (Alaska is a U.S. state), but port handling and paperwork take time.
Alaska Marine Highway: The state-run ferry system operates from Bellingham, WA through Southeast Alaska (Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Haines) and connects to Whittier and Homer on the road system. This is the primary method for getting vehicles to Juneau and Southeast Alaska communities. Ferry schedules are limited, some routes run only a few times per month.
Canadian border crossing (overland route): If shipping overland via the Alaska Highway, the carrier must cross into Canada at the BC border and back into the U.S. at the Alaska border. This requires valid vehicle documentation, carrier insurance valid in Canada, and potentially Canadian customs declarations for the vehicle. We handle all documentation coordination.
Alaska vehicle regulations: No annual safety inspection required. No emissions testing required. New residents must register within 30 days. Alaska has no state sales tax, but some municipalities charge local sales tax (typically 2-7%). Alaska does not charge a vehicle property tax.
Costs for Alaska auto transport are significantly higher than mainland shipping due to the ocean barge component. Typical ranges for a standard sedan:
Ocean barge method (most common):
Overland via Alaska Highway (from Pacific Northwest only):
Factors that affect pricing: Vehicle size, season (winter costs more), barge schedule availability, Anchorage vs Fairbanks vs Southeast AK destination, operable vs inoperable.
EXCELLENT Based on 9 reviews Posted on Google Selly StuffTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Joyce was amazing to work with from start to finish . My daughter was moving alone from Las Vegas to Chicago and the dates were constantly fluctuating. Joyce was so patient with me , understanding and empathetic to our needs . She made us feel like family . We used Sherpa years ago , and her customer service and communication was way beyond Sherpas ( and they gave excellent service as well, but Joyce blew them out of the water ) The price was competitive with the other carriers , but it really was her personality and customer service that sealed the deal . I would highly recommend using 2 Js auto transport over any of the more popular auto transporters. I spoke to atleast 5 other carriers before choosing 2js transport ( they were highly recommended by my brother , he used in past to get a car from California to Florida ) and I’m so glad we decided to use them . It was seamless and again the open line of communication was exceptional ! I can’t say enough great things about the whole process other than I would pick them hands down over any other carrier !Posted on Google Brandon KeyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This company is very professional and had great communication. I was a little nervous about transporting my vehicle for the first time but they stood behind everything they said they would and followed through from beginning to end. They were very fairly priced amongst competitors, readily available anytime I called or had questions and they were extremely helpful. I would use them again in a heartbeat. From the very beginning, the team was professional and responsive, answering all my questions and providing a detailed quote with no hidden fees. I buy and sell construction equipment all over the US and always go to 2 J’s for long distance transport. They are able to find excellent rates on partial loads within a day or two. The drivers they send are always very professional and helpful. I’ve received quotes from other dispatchers and sometimes drivers offer their services directly, but they can rarely offer compete with 2 J’s pricing or timely service.

You guys were awesome. Picked up on time, dropped off on time as promised. I was returning customer. I had used their service a year and a half back. They were good at that time and this time too they were fantastic. I was fortunate to have got an enclosed truck for the price of open. Seems they had a truck passing on my dates and they gladly put me there. Thank you, John. Thank you, Joyce. I would highly recommend their services.
